Strong Relationships with Specialists Provide a Referral Base and Strengthen the Physician-Patient Bond
Dr. Kevin Spencer, Medical Director for Connected Senior Care Advantage, is leading efforts to create unique and meaningful relationships between independent primary care physicians and select specialty practices in Austin.
A recent study in the Annals of Family Medicine stressed that careful selection of specialists is a vital responsibility for primary care physicians who practice value-based care. The article also recommended that PCPs develop strong relationships with a smaller group of leading specialists, indicating that such connections provide a referral base for their patients, while at the same time strengthen the bonds with their patients.
With the support of Heidi Hittner, agilon health SVP of Network Engagement Strategies; and Linda Minshew, VP of Network Contracting and Engagement for Connected Senior Care Advantage (CSCA); Dr. Spencer negotiated service-level agreements with the leading retinal specialist practice in Austin. This practice provides readings and interpretations of the retina scans—required for all diabetic patients—and has developed a protocol to educate patients about more cost-effective alternatives for treating common eye disorders. This collaboration is well-positioned to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of ophthalmologic care for CSCA members in Austin. Additional service level agreements with a leading nephrology practice and oncology practice are also in development.
